For a desktop set up I’ve honestly not heard anything better, powered w/ Fosi amp. I previously had klipsch which sounded like a trashcan full of diapers, and other 2.1 systems. The sound is awesome and balanced check out the in depth “audio science review”. With the amp, I can turn it up and make it spicy and tingly. Again it’s better than the 8 inch subwoofer included in the garbage klipsch 2.1 referenceI have the Fozzy audio BT20A Pro with bass and treble adjustments. Which is 300 W power, plenty for these 40/80 W speakers. I am an amateur auidophile, the set up is so great. Seriously you won’t regret it or a PC/laptop system

I was not expecting these to punch and sound as good as they do for nier field desk setup..

I got these for $55 on prime day and I'd buy another if the time ever called for it.

These are stellar and and absolutely the best budget speakers you can buy.

They're not-fatiguing and detailed enough to my ears.

They're essentially the "Koss" sound for speakers.. Super cheap but super enjoyable sound signature with plenty of bass

These are a must buy if you're in the hobby or you want a cheap set of amazing speakers..

For the money I'd pick these over my previous pair of Micca RB42x speakers if that tells you how good these sound.

I don't see them on the Dayton Audio website, or Parts Express. Too bad, as for the money they are terrific. I may even like them better than the MK442T speakers that i have (necessarily) in storage. Those have a "transmission line" configuration (think Bose "wave radio"), with two 4" woofers. These have one and use the same nice tweeter. With the towers i sometimes thought i heard cabinet resonance; not with these, and the bass is better than you'd think for their size. Same excellent vocals, center image, etc. To quote Amir from AudioScienceReview:

"The expectation going into a review like this is that speaker is going to be junk unless proven otherwise. Well, it was proven otherwise! Somehow the designer managed to deal with the compromises just right to create a speaker that produces a very good experience with equalization. And not bad without.

Overall, I am going to recommend the Dayton MK402X. If you need a pair of speakers that can excite you with well recorded music most of the time and not cost more than a dinner, you have found it."

I hope this means that Dayton Audio has something even better up their sleeves, with similar budget sensibilities (they seem to be seeking a higher price point lately; or maybe there will be a trickle-down from the experience in designing for that market) to replace these.

These speakers are seriously amazing for the price. I've been through a few different sets of speakers over the years in search of something that meets my quality standards while being small enough to fit on my computer desk. I finally found these and am finally completely happy with how my music sounds without having to use headphones.

They do require some equalization to meet their full potential, but even without that, they are still really good. If you want a detailed analysis of these speakers, search "MK402X audio science review" on your preferred search engine. You will find a review on a forum that covers all kinds of quality tests and at the end of that review, it even has equalization settings that take these speakers from really good to extremely good.

Here are the EQ settings I used from that review which made these speakers basically perfect for me:
      Frequency: 105; Gain: -4; Quality: 3
      Frequency: 1500; Gain: +4; Quality: 0.8
      Frequency: 5800; Gain: -2; Quality: 3
"Quality" affects the shape of the equalization cure. It is important if you really want to bring these speakers to their full potential. But it will still make these speakers much better even if you can't change that setting.

I also paired them with an 8" subwoofer. These speakers sound great without a sub, but adding a sub helps fill in the really low frequencies that these can't reach.

Some reviewers point some shortcomings of these speakers, which I don't question. It's been a while since I listened to a really high end and expensive pair of speakers, but I guess I don't have golden ears because I really liked these at moderate volume. Pushed really hard, the woofer produces distortion, but it's only 4", and I don't listen to music that loud. In a small room and not too loud, these speakers sound great. I noticed some sibilance, but I tried them in a 2.1 setup with classical, solo piano, rock, guitar, choral music, and they all sounded very nice to me, with natural sound and great panning from side to side. I paired them with an old Advent subwoofer and the sound is really full. At this price, just buy them and judge for yourself. Parts Express has great customer service and warranty.

These little speakers live up to their professional critical reviews. They are well made and fill the room with distortion-free sound. For highly elevated sound levels, I use Monitor Audio Towers; however, these Daytons deliver very good high fidelity across the spectrum at reasonable sound levels.
